Pursuant to Article 2 of the Law on the State Border Guard Service, the State Border Guard Service (hereinafter, the SBGS) is charged with controlling borders (border surveillance and border checks) in Lithuania. The SBGS falls under authority of the Ministry of the Interior, which supervises and controls the implementation of border guard policy.

The Law on the State Border Guard Service establishes tasks and functions of the SBGS and the rights and responsibilities of the SBGS personnel.

Vilnius Frontier District

The frontier district operates along a 415 km-long section of the border with Belarus and administers nine border guard stations.

The frontier district staff  work at the following international border crossing points: Vilnius Airport, Kaunas Airport, Vilnius Railway Station, Kena Railway, Medininkai and Lavoriškės, and at the following border crossing points for local traffic: Šumskas, Ureliai, Norviliškės, Krakūnai, Tverečius, Adutiškis, Papelekis and Prienai.

Varėna Frontier District

The frontier district operates along a 207 km-long section of the border with Belarus and administers the following six frontier stations.

The frontier district staff  work at the following international border crossing points: Šalčininkai, Stasylos Railway and Raigardas, and at the following border crossing points for local traffic: Rakai, Eišiškės and Latežeris.

The frontier district also along 104 km-long section of the border with Poland.

The frontier district staff  work at the following international border crossing points: Kybartai and Kybartai Railway, and at the Švendubrė River Border Crossing Point. 

Pagėgiai Frontier District

The frontier district operates along a 178 km-long section of the border with Russia (109 km along the river of Nemunas), and administers the following thirteen frontier stations: Kybartai, Kudirkos Naumiestis, Šilgaliai, Rociškiai, Viešvilė, Bardinai, Plaškiai, Vileikiai, Neringa, Uosto, Kopgalis, Palanga and Zokniai.

The frontier district staff  work at the following international border crossing points: Panemunė, Ramoniškiai and Pagėgiai Railway, and at the following river border crossing points: Rusnė and Jurbarkas.

Former Coast Guards District, now merged with Pagėgiai district, is assigned to secure a 462 km-long border section and operates along the borders with Russia and Latvia, and at the sea border. The border with Russia that the district is responsible for includes a 1.8 km-long section on land and 18.5 km-long section in the Curonian Lagoon. The perimeter of the territorial sea is 119.7 km long. The district controls a 322 km-long section of the border with Latvia.

The district administers the following six frontier stations:  and one for special tasks.

The frontier district staff  work at the following international sea border crossing points: Molo, Pilies, Malkų įlankos and Būtingė Oil Terminal, and at the following international border crossing points: Palanga Airport, Zokniai Airport, Nida River, and Nida.

Border Guards School

The school is a vocational education institution which trains qualified officials for SBGS units and provides advanced professional training for border guards.
