Implementation of Interreg VI-A Lithuania-Poland cooperation PROGRAMM’ Project No. LTPL00371 „Joint initiatives for strengthening Lithuanian and Polish border safeguard“ / Border safeguard

Continuing its consistent and active international cooperation in strengthening public security in the Lithuanian–Polish border region, the State Border Guard Service at the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, together with its Polish partners – the Podlaskie Border Guard Division and the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Border Guard Division – has launched the international project “Joint Initiatives for strengthening Lithuanian and Polish border safeguard” / Border Safeguard.

The project is co-financed by the Interreg VI-A Lithuania–Poland Cooperation Programme (Project No. LTPL00371). It builds logically upon two previously successfully implemented projects and complements current joint projects under the same programme. While each project consists of unique activities, they all pursue a common goal – to create a sustainable and effective bilateral system for reducing cross-border crime and addressing potential geopolitical threats in the border region.

Given the growing security challenges, such as uncontrolled migration flows and the heightened threat of war, the Border Guard Services face the need to implement not only coordinated national actions but also to strengthen inter-institutional partnerships. It is necessary to:

• continue joint operations,

• improve interoperability and data exchange,

• introduce innovative solutions and technologies,

• increase organizational flexibility and crisis response capabilities.

This project lays the foundation for stronger inter-institutional trust, enhanced preparedness of border guard institutions, and more effective joint responses to common threats, thus contributing to the overall security of the European Union.

Project objective is to expand the institutional capacities of the Lithuanian and Polish Border Guard Services to ensure better cooperation in managing public security in the border region.

To achieve this objective, two work packages have been planned:

1. Work Package 1 – Strengthening of cooperation governance and is aimed at improving cooperation management among Lithuanian and Polish border officers to enhance joint actions in the border region.

2. Work Package 2 – Consolidation of institutional capabilities for better cooperation management is focused on enhancing the operational capabilities of the Border Guard Services for the effective implementation of joint public security measures in the border area.

Target group of the projects is officers from the Lithuanian and Polish Border Guard Services. 198 participants will take part in joint tactical training, and an additional 80 Polish officers will improve their official vehicle driving skills. These trainings aim to improve the specialized skills of border officers in both countries to conduct joint actions necessary for managing crises along the Lithuanian–Polish border.

During the project, partner experts will analyse hybrid threats and develop a response plan. Specialized equipment purchased by each partner will contribute to technological innovation and increased institutional efficiency in joint operations within the border area. At the end of the project, a final international conference will be organised.

Project will be implemented in 24 months, starting from June 1, 2025.

Project budget: € 1,999,950.00, of which € 1,599,960.00 is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
