Empowering Front-Line Officers: Central Asia Border Management Programme Initiatives

The Border Management Programme in Central Asia has successfully concluded a comprehensive series of national workshops focussing on profiling potential traffickers of human beings and people smugglers. Expert trainers from the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service, who have extensive knowledge of risk management and document fraud, provided valuable guidance to participants in identifying potential traffickers and smugglers.

These workshops introduced innovative risk indicators, enabling front-line officers to effectively recognize and analyze these cross-border crimes. Participants explored the EU best practices in profiling, gaining insights into the effective use of IT tools to enhance their risk assessment capabilities.

Importantly, the sessions clarified the essential distinctions between human trafficking and migrant smuggling, fostering a more nuanced understanding of these complex issues. Following the workshops, a series of tailored booklets outlining key risk profiles and indicators were developed for each Central Asian country, thereby reinforcing ongoing efforts to improve border management and security in the region.
